Coveting Cotton

Being that I studied textiles in school (fun fact you probably didn’t know about me), I am a compulsive label checker.

Just like you read food labels because you care about what’s going in your body, you should also be reading those clothing labels so you know what’s going ON your body. That being said, my preferred fabric of choice is & always has been– cotton.

Why cotton? Time for some Textiles 101:

» Cotton is a natural fiber!!! Synthetic fabrics are either made from toxic chemicals or treated with them. Your skin is the largest organ that deals with absorption & elimination, so all those chemicals touching your skin are being absorbed into your body!

» Cotton makes up the majority of everyone’s wardrobes, making it one of the most popular fabrics, meaning it’s everywhere & totally accessible to all.

» It’s breathable, which is perfect for the warm blooded like myself.

» Soft as butter, which if you recall, super soft fabrics are my fave.

» It’s the most versatile fabric around being used in anything from jeans & a t-shirt to ready-to-wear high fashion garments & home decor!

» Cotton is chic, minimalistic, & The Fabric of Our Lives ®.

There are tons of other fabrics out there trying to disguise themselves as cotton (can you blame them?) & that is exactly why I am a huge label-reading advocate. Again, you should be fully aware of what’s going on your body & avoid those “mystery fabrics” at all costs.

“Mystery fabrics” will never have the same durability & quality as cotton, which is a huge problem for me. They always end up pilling (pet peeve x 100), sometimes can be quite stinky (ever ordered something & opened the box only to discover a horrendous odor?! Not cool.), they just do not breathe at all, & eventually they just fall apart completely.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not perfect in always wearing head to toe cotton & sometimes sacrifice for style (don’t we all), but I really do make a solid attempt at knocking out synthetics from my wardrobe.

Hopefully, after this post, you too will be paying more attention to labels & incorporating some more cool & comfy cotton into your wardrobe.

Latest cotton fave of the moment: this rad & lightweight denim jacket with frayed edges & some nineties-inspired daisy flair. Sadly it’s sold out, but this one is next on my list. Obsessed with the embroidery & tassel details.
