Hippie Life | Why I Made the Deodorant Switch

fashionlush, why use natural deodorant, holistic health

I am totally not the kind of hippie who wears vegan shoes/tie-dyes all my own clothes/shower seldomly- if at all (although I do only wash my hair once a week), but I do like to get as natural as I can as often as I can.

The latest au naturale switch? My deodorant.

The other day my sister was over (she’s the master of this kinda stuff) & saw my deodorant on the counter. She gasped in some serious horror & told me it had to go in the trash yesterday. Huh? I love my Dove… it smells so good & works like a charm. Why?!

After she schooled me in the subject, the search for a new deod begun.

Here’s a quick rundown of why you too should consider ditch your go-to deodorant:

» Antiperspirant & deodorant are two completely different things. Antiperspirant contains a nasty little substance called aluminum while deodorant does not. Aluminum actually stops sweat from ever happening, deodorants kill the bacteria that causes odor.

» Sweating has a bad reputation, but why? Our bodies need to sweat to get rid of toxins. It’s the stink that’s the problem, & deodorant deals with that quite well.

» The aluminum in antiperspirants, along with a variety of other nasty ass chemicals, can be extremely dangerous to your health (aluminum is actually toxic!).

» Aluminum is also bad for the skin under your arms. That plus all the chemicals can often cause irritation in that area.

» The location makes this extremely dangerous. Your basically applying chemicals & toxins right on top of your lymph nodes. Your lymph nodes job is to help rid your body of toxins/cancer cells/ viruses/ bacteria/ etc., so when you swipe on your deodorant in the AM, your letting your skin & your lymph node a whole lot of dangerous stuff.

» There are no definite studies to prove that antiperspirant causes cancer, but there is certainly a correlation with the earlier onset of breast cancer in women these days & the use of antiperspirants w/ aluminum.

Rumor has it, natural deodorant just doesn’t work well at all. Totally not true! I am sure there are plenty of duds that don’t cut it, but there are also some really great ones (seen below) that will leave you fresh all day long.

I just purchased “death by lavender” & am loving it just as much, if not more, than my dangerous Dove. There is absolutely zero hint of a stink, even after a long day + an intense barre sesh. Not to mention, the packaging is 10x cooler than the boring old Arm & Hammer man.

So, will you guys be making the switch too? Hope so! If you try any great natural ones or have a deodorant DIY? Let me know!
