OUR BEDROOM IS DONE… finally. Does it feel like we’re moving super slow on our house? Yea, same…. cause we kind of are. Listen- I can put together an outfit from anything, but when it comes to home decor it’s just NOT my thing. I mean, I can do it (I do think things are looking amaze), but it takes a lot of hand holding to make decisions & I can only tackle one room at a time. I can multi-task in all aspects of my life, minus home decor.
So YEA, that’s one of the reasons why I am taking my sweet time… but so happy our room is done so we can move on to our third & final room in the house. If I don’t take a detour because I already want to replace a few pieces of furniture, re-do the dining area, wrap up the living room, & add some things to my closet room… see how easy it is for me to get distracted?
OKAY- but back to the bedroom!!!! Let’s discuss…
We have both always loved Danish decor & a black/white aesthetic, so that is something we obviously wanted to incorporate into the whole house vibe… but this time around we actually want a lot MORE color. Our room, the second bathroom, & the kitchen all stay true to our signature b&w style… but throughout the rest of the house we are doing a lot more color as well as tons of vintage art deco feels.
I would describe our home decor as Danish minimalism meets Miami in the 80’s. Kinda random, but it’s working.
For the bedroom though, I wanted it to be a CALM room & to me calm = clutter free, minimal, cozy, chill af. Oh- & gender neutral. This was a big one for me because I have brought in a lot of pink & I wanted Zack to have a space he can really be stoked to wake up in everyday. I mean, the first thing he sees in the morning is (after Ruby & Howard in his face wanting breakfast) are skateboards! Perfect right?
**P.S. someone dm’ed me asking if Zack has any say in the decor in the house, the answer: yes & no lol. I think he is fine with giving me the final say, but I ask his opinion on everything & if he hates it we won’t get it (unless it’s a stellar deal on OfferUp & I see the potential when he doesn’t). For our room he got to pick which boards he wanted to hang & his office room is all his vision, but I am helping make sure it all comes together!**
OK SO we’ve got the skateboards for him, the Prada for me. Throw in that ginormous cozy bed + the art deco inspired cubes, it’s just a whole vibe. Now, let’s breakdown of literally EVERYTHING we did + bought for this room…
Our Black & White Gender Neutral Primary Bedroom
WHAT WE DID:
+ if you read my previous home decor posts- you know this already, but to reiterate: the walls were a drab af gray so we painted them white & we changed out all of our floors. OBVIOUSLY these two things make a massive difference & brightened up the room so much.
+ OH- & if you look at the before picture- see that weird white thing on the wall? It’s a tv mount with an outlet (no cords hanging down, a must), but we had him move it to the opposite wall. I didn’t like the idea of sleeping with my back to the door… although apparently it’s not very Feng Shui to have a window over your bed either #lessonlearned.
WHAT WE BOUGHT:
+ the bed: FIRST & FOREMOST, LET’S DISCUSS THIS. It’s amazing, right? Would you believe me we got it for Ruby… our dog. Yes, we actually bought this bed for the DOG. To sum it up: Ruby has a back issue & she fell off of our previous bed so the vet recommended a low bed. Which is why we decided to change our bed, so thank you Ruby cause a KING IS A GAME CHANGER. We had a queen before & honestly no.1 tip for couples: get a king bed. It makes all the difference.
When the vet said low bed, I immediately envisioned us having a bed similar to the Restoration Hardware cloud bed. minus the 4k pricetag. I searched & searched and couldn’t find a thing. I was up one night on OfferUp looking for desks when I found an account selling the most stunning new beds. I messaged them, we went to their showroom (in a really unsuspecting area, I totally thought we got duped), & were presented with a HUGE catalogue to choose from. They had tons of low beds & we ended up going with this one. It’s SO big & so comfy- plus it has pockets on the side for books… or a taser, if you’re me AND usb chargers in the headboard. If you’re in San Diego you can hit up DeCorner SD to see some of these beds/other furniture irl or you can click here to find a showroom in your area.
Oh, & our mattress is a Lull bed (< use this link for $150 off!) & it’s about 9000x more comfortable than our previous Tempurpedic & came in a box.
+ best ever black satin pillow cases: it’s 2020, you better be sleeping with a satin pillowcase. Fun fact: when I was a kid I white sating pillow that I grew attached to like one would a stuffed animal. My bougie 7 year old self brought that satin pillow everywhere. They are so much better for your hair & always feels like the cool side of the pillow. Major bonus points that they are black satin (they have a ton of colors!).
+ white duvet cover: because we have two dogs that sleep with us, we go through a lot of duvet covers but this one is my new FAVE ever- SUPER soft & cozy + it has a zipper closure (buttons or snaps are so annoying). I will definitely buy it again as soon as one of our dogs ruins this one lol.
+ a REALLY GREAT pair of white sheets: My mom always raised me to be particular about my sheets & it’s turned me into a sheet SNOB. I need my sheets to be cool but cozy, crispy, & soft… these are it. I love them. Nothing beats a good set of sheets.
+ black fur blanket: all beds need a blanket at the end (imo) & this black furry one is a dream come true.
+ mongolion fur pillow: I got this pillow for something else, but I put it on the bed because I like a pillow or two… but not 10, I hate a crowded bed. It’s a really pretty fur pillow (brush it for optimal appearance) but I do plan to replace this pillow with something someday that has a tiny bit of color or animal print even… if anyone sees cool pillows, send to me. I’ve been hunting!!
+ mirrored cube end tables: I kinda feel like these mirrored cubes would be in a scene in Death Becomes Her (you know that movie?!), there is a vintage art deco feel to them which I love. Also- there isn’t a lot of space to the left and right of the bed so the mirrors helped make it not look cluttered IMO. LOVE THESE!!!
+ mid-century credenza: this is sold out cause we got it years ago, but I found a similar style here. It’s a really pretty piece of furniture, but I do think I want to put something vintage here at some point. Also- this piece got damaged in our move which is being covered with that faux plant.
+ Crosley record player: when Zack & I met we both had matching record collections *awww* & we always have had a record player in our house.
+ Carhartt book: Thank you Pinterest for the open book inspo… apparently it’s a big trend in “home styling” these days! Also, the Carhartt book is on point with the gender neutral theme & the page we opened is just too perfect for us (skating and Italian statues!)
+ black marble bookends: how chic are these bookends? White marble is out imo, but I love love love a pop of edgy black marble. Especially cool when paired with either all white or all black books.
+ hanging planter: and as much as we love all the black & white, we did need SOME color & I thought a hanging plant would be a fun way to do that. We love this chic planter & it filled it with a string of pearls plant. Also- it came with a rope to hang it but we swapped that out for a heavy duty gold chain.
+ Prada poster: this amazing poster was originally going to go in my closet room, but it just worked too good in our room. Love how the arrow points to the skateboards.
WHAT’S LEFT TO-DO:
+ re-do the attached bathroom: I swapped out the faucet hardware, changed the mirror, & we had the cabinets painted black… but other than that, it’s been a neglected room. I barely ever go in there, it has a shower that I have NEVER used, so I keep forgetting about it. We will wallpaper it eventually & I want to change out the flooring in both bathrooms some day.
+ add some sort of color changing light feature- maybe a light strip above the bed or something like that. I think thats vibey at night.
+ get a new tv: so apparently our tv is ancient (I think it’s from 2012?). I honestly had no idea until my mom came over & was horrified about how bulky the thing was. This isn’t at the top of my list because IT GETS THE JOB DONE & we clearly have a lot of other things taking priority- but one day we will swap out that tv.
