The DIY Way to Buy a Bra

bra-buying-basic

Okay, don’t know about you guys, but I think it’s probably been 10 years since I’ve been in a Victoria’s Secret. I’m not a big fan of malls, so it’s been a hot minute since I have had a pro check my bra size & in 10 years time, I figured I should probably look into it.

Things change, gravity happens, bras expire (aka lose all that supportive elasticity!) & you can never underestimate the power of a good bra. It’s less uncomfortable than an ill fitting bra, it’s all around more attractive (no unwanted boob bulges), & it really does make clothes look so much better on.

I love a good t-shirt bra or no bra situation just as much as the next girl, but I also know when the outfit calls for a bra… & that bra is gonna fit like a charm- cause today I’m sharing some easy tips to on how to find your perfect bra from your couch.

Measure Up!

1. First, the band. Using a soft measuring tape, wrap tape around your torso at band level.

If the number is even, add 4 & if the number is odd, add 5. I.E. if you measure at 29 inches, your band would be a size 34.

2. Now, the cups! Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust. Take a deep breath so the measuring tape is comfortable & not too tight. Round up your number & then subtract your band size from this measurement. So, if you measured at a 38 bust you would subtract 34 (band size) and come up with the number 4. Refer to the below.

0 = aa | 1 = a | 2 = b | 3 = c | 4 = d | 5 = dd | 6 = ddd/f | 7 = g

SO- with that measurement, I would be a 34D.

What Bra is Right for Me?

So many bras that serve so many different purposes- which ones should every girl own?

1. Convertible Bra: lots of versatility, moveable straps & esp. good for women with narrow shoulders.

2. Demi cup Bra: my personal go-to. it’s half coverage, so still hot, but also has great support. you can varying degrees of push up as well w/ a demi cup.

3. Balcony Bras: aka shelf bras, also a favorite of mine, but more for special occasions! Balcony bras are also great for ladies with a broad back, medium size chest, and/or boobs that are a tad further apart.

4. Full Coverage: for all my busty ladies- a full coverage bra will keep the girls nicely in check.

5. The Bralette: basically, the best thing since slice bread. It’s comfortable, goes with everything, & comes in lace. It’s a win- & if you have two girls who are sisters/not twins (i.e. one boob is bigger than the other)… throw on a bralette & put a pad in the smaller side. Easy peasy.

Put it On Proper

Lastly, when you finally get your bra in your hands & it’s time to see if the magic measuring worked… time to put your bra on, the right way.

Yup, you’ve probably been doing it wrong all of your life- here’s how it’s done:

1. put your arms through the armholes, obviously.

2. clasp your bra. since it’s new, it should fit snug on the loosest clasp. one it gets older, it will stretch- which is why there are options to tighten the bra 2 more notches.

3. adjust your straps to fit your shoulders perfectly (not to tight, not too loose).

4. now, the fun part, lean over… & let things fall where they may. LOL. adjust as needed, & get on with your day (while keeping the girls secure).
