DRUMROLL PLZ….
The kitchen makeover is complete & I AM SO OBSESSED with this space!! It is so good that I MAY just become a full blown domestic goddess- this kitchen is MAJOR banana bread baking in the oven vibes- AMIRITE?!
From the beginning, the kitchen was definitely one of the major highlights of the house. Our house was a flip so it did have nice new appliances, a subway tile backsplash (something I really wanted), brand new counters, & a nice open layout- but the overall look was just a tad too dated/generic for my taste. It needed to be brightened up BIG time & needed some edge to it.
SO, LET’S GET INTO IT- today I am breaking down EVERYTHING we did to give our kitchen/dining area a fresh update (all of which was pretty damn budget friendly too!) + links to EVERYTHING you see in our little kitchen & dining room!
All The Details Of Our Modern Kitchen/Dining Room Makeover
Painted the Cabinets & Walls
I mentioned our painting job in the bathroom makeover post– but mentioning it again here cause this really made a HUGE difference in the kitchen. The cabinets were a weird shade of steel blue & our walls were a shade a dingy shade grey. This is apparently trendy in the world of flippers cause it’s “neutral” but for me it was just so blah. The white walls brightened it up & the contrast with the black cabinets gave it a super modern feel.
New Floors
AHHH, how much are we loving the new floors? I AM OBSESSED!! The kitchen was a real b*tch to replace the floors because it was NEW TILE which is hard af to get up & flooring installers charge per cut when it comes to tile & our kitchen had A TON of cuts to be made *insert cha-ching sound here*.
If it wasn’t a weird fake grey wood tile, I might have considered leaving it… but not mad because I REALLY love the look of having one floor throughout. The freshly painted cabinets took a little hit when doing the floors in the kitchen, so if you are planning to do floors & paint cabinets- do floors first (we weill need to do a touch up at some point!).
Swapped out Light Fixtures
Everyone kept saying they liked the fixtures the house came with but they were a hard no for me. SO RUSTIC looking & just not the feel I was going for. I spent HOURS sifting through lights & ended up on the killer combo you are looking at in this post.
For above the dining table we did the Mitzi Astrid Chandelier & for the pendant lights we did the Neko Pendants– the brass + black combo looks so good together!! I was slightly worried about the gold & the stainless steel appliances clashing but I really wanted a pop of gold & these lights really made this whole area come together!
Changed Kitchen sink faucet
Such a small thing that, IMO, makes a big difference. The faucet before was bulky & a weird brushed bronze color- I snagged this CHIC & modern matte black faucet & Zack watched a video on how to install it (this is def. something you can do yourself!).
Gave Our Old Dining Table & Chairs a Makeover
We got this table years ago when we moved into our last place & it’s called the Ikea Docksta table. Unfortunately I don’t recommend buying it as all Ikea is just too cheap (this one may be a better option one for a similar price). I LOVE the look of a tulip table, but the quality was terrible. Ikea likes things to last about 2 years before they want you to come back to replace it & this table was no exception. It had so many HUGE chips on the top & I was planning to sell it so I could find something new.
I ended up changing my mind because everything when you own a home is just so expensive & there is ZERO need for me to get rid of a table I actually like just to buy a new one. We sanded that bad boy down & painted it white- GOOD AS NEW!! As for the chairs, they used to be silver with white pads & we spray painted them black & then bought new black pads for the chairs. They used to look like this & now they look exactly like these chairs! SUCH a glow up!!!
& WE GOT A CUTE ASS RUNNER RUG!!!
How can one be this excited about a rug thought?! I absolutely love our new runner rug because it’s PINK & it keeps that high traffic area clean. I was Swiffer-ing those kitchen floors like three times a day. So much praise for the runner rug!!!!
What’s Left To-Do:
We need to hang some art! We are waiting for all of our decor to be done so we can really assess our art & see what should go where- the less holes in the wall, the better!
We do have TWO wishlist items for the kitchen, which are the things we WANT but absolutely do not need. First one is marble countertops- I have ALWAYS wanted marble/marble look counters. Our counters are brand new, so we are leaving them for now, but one day I will have my marble counters (whether this house or the next!). The other things we want to do is move the washer/dryer set up OUT of the kitchen & into the hall closet. Once that whole set up is moved we want to transform that space in the kitchen to be a walk in pantry!
