No matter how my style evolves or how much color I start wearing (we all know, I am having a major moment with red), an all black outfit will always be my absolute favorite go-to look. For the most part, wearing all black is pretty self-explanatory, but there is a fine line between all black looking cool… & boring all black.
I went through a phase where I only wore all black, & looking back, I was getting definitely getting into the boring zone big time. I took a breather & incorporated some more color to mix things up, but at the end of the day- I always touch base w/ a good ABO moment. Ya feel?
SO- today I just wanted to share with you guys my little how to wear all black manifesto- just a few tips to keep your all black style fresh.
tips on how to wear all black w/o looking boring
1. mix up fabrics & textures:
An all black co-ord can be incredibly chic, but typically I feel like black on black in the same fabric can gives off uniform or pajama vibes. Personally, I am all about a good leather/sweater combo. Considering the current weather situation, I opted for this super soft Frame leather moto skirt + a fun off the shoulder sweater crop top top by Opening Ceremony. If it were colder, I’d swap the skirt out for some rad leather pants + the crop for a chunky oversized knit.
2. keep it season appropriate
You can really wear black all year round, as long as you keep the fabrics season appropriate. During winter opt for leather, heavy cotton, wool (love wool cause it’s the blackest of blacks!), cashmere, etc. & in summer go for light cotton pieces, denim, & anything silky! Although I am rocking a skirt & crop top- the leather/sweater combo make it a bit more winter-esque.
3. all about the fit
With black, you don’t have to be afraid to wear super fitted garments. Everyone knows that black is the most flattering color, so it always gives me an extra boost of confidence to get a little spicy. Super baggy black pieces can quickly go from kinda Olsen chic to garbage bag-ish.
4. get extra with your accessories
Typically I live by the “take off the last thing you put on” motto- & usually that last piece is either a too busy pair of earrings or one too many necklaces. With an all black look, I don’t hold back on the accessories. I am a big fan of lots of gold jewelry right now, so I piled on a handful of my favorite necklaces + a rad pair of hoops.
5. match your blacks
One common misconception is that all blacks match. No, they don’t, & it is kind of a pet peeve of mine. For example- wool is the blackest of blacks there is, pure black, so if you pair with a pair of black linen trousers- chances are the trousers will have some sort of undertone that will definitely stand out. As long as your two pieces have the same undertone & don’t look clashing when worn together- you’re good to go.
6. careful with cotton
When it comes to all black cotton pieces, be wary of fading. A faded black tee is not a good look. So- you can either dry clean your black cotton pieces OR wash in cold water at home with a dark clothes friendly detergent & a little white vinegar. If it’s too late and faded, giveaway pile it goes.
orchard mile | the all black edit
This look is from a new fave online shopping destination, Orchard Mile. What really sold about Orchard Mile is that it’s more of an online style hub than a boutique. They are basically giving you one shopping cart to shop from a ton of really cool brands- the packages you get come from the brand. It’s kinda like hitting up a bunch of stores at the mall, but only having to wait in one line to pay for it all. Ya feel me? Everything you want, one easy checkout.
I wear black on black TOO much sometimes hahaha I love your tips for wearing an all black ensemble!
