Man ohhh man have I got a good DIY for all of you! The other week (or maybe two), I hopped in my car and made my way up to the good old LBC to visit my ladies. When all of us are together, it is always seriously hilarious. I don’t know what it is, but when the forces join, sh*t gets weird. I love it.

When all of our nutty shenanigans slowed down for a hot minute, we decided to squeeze in a craft. On the menu: tinctures. Making these, I seriously felt like a chemist or something. It all seemed so scientific, yet in reality it was a breeze.

Tinctures serve so many purposes, depending on the type. I will share more about the tinctures we made & their properties later in the post. Read on ladies.

The only thing is, after you make them, it takes 2 weeks for the magic happen. Therefore, I didn’t get to see the finished result, but I got word they were fab.

This is a great gift idea or just a special little yummy treat for yourself.

DIY Essential Oils

+ We made 4 diff. options: Vanilla, cinnamon, orange, and lemon.

+ Supplies Needed: vodka, brandy, 6 cinnamon sticks, a bunch of orange peels, a bunch of lemon peels, 4-5 vanilla pods, mason jar, little bottles (like these).

+ Step 1: Prep your goods. For the vanilla beans you are going to want to cut them lengthwise and scrape the little beans out, place two in a jar. Peel your oranges & lemons removing the pith.

Step 2: fill your mason jars to the brim with the corresponding booze. Vanilla & cinnamon get the brandy, the citruses get the vodka. Screw the lid on tight.

Step 3: Let sit in a cool dark place for 2 weeks, shaking it daily. When ripe & ready, pour your liquid into the smaller jar using a coffee filter (or cheesecloth) to catch all the excess.

here are the benefits of your new tinctures:

+ Vanilla: First and foremost, it smells delish. Smelling vanilla help you relax (much needed), works to lift your spirits, and is an aphrodisiac that lowers inhibitions (super sexy).

+ Cinnamon: Cinnamon is also quite risque as it is also an aphrodisiac and will drive your guy nuts. Dab a little on your neck, and flirt a little so he can get a whiff. He will be on his toes quick. It is also an inflammatory that can be applied directly to sore muscles and it’s antibacterial.

+ Orange: Orange provides a fruit scent that helps with any icky depression, calms frayed nerves, and altogether lifts your spirits (and the ones around you). If consumed, orange will also help aid digestion, provide anti-cancer properties, & assist in body detox. Lastly, you can also put it on your skin to help with acne, wrinkles, and overall skin health.

+ Lemon: Lemon has a lot of the same properties of orange as they are both citrus fruits. Yet lemons also provide an extra amount of energy when you smell it or add it to your water, the scent helps relieve anxiety, and it is also a natural insect repellent & disinfectant.

There you have it ladies, have fun with this one & share your results.

  1. you can ingest tinctures which is basically what you have listed a recipe for. Essential oils are herbs with oils like grapeseed or Jojoba.. A tincture i something you put in teas or drinks or just take it straight from the dropper. Tinctures have vodka in them, preferably organic. But experiment and have fun!

  2. you do know these are not essential oils, right? These are tinctures. There is a huge difference. An essential oil is the distilled fraction from an herb and takes a huge amount to make a small amount of oil. It requires a distiller from which you receive a hydrosol (a relatively large amount) and an actual essential oil (a very small amount).
An alcohol tincture has absolutely nothing to do with essential oils, and in fact depending on how you make it (such as described here) you may not have any of the actual aromatic or essential oils in the final product. Was this an intentional mistake to mislead people, or are you mislead yourself?

    1. Thank you for clarifying. I wrote this post a very long time ago and was mislead. All changed to tinctures :)

    1. Thank you for clarifying KINDLY, unlike the rest of the people who have commented. I appreciate it & all has been changed!

      1. Thanks :-) There’s so much info out there. Sometimes it gets very confusing. Right now there is a lot of confusion over essential oils, so it has gotten more important. Beautiful blog. GREAT pics.

  3. Oh my god. You’re such an idiot. These are not essential oils. Not even close. These are herbal tinctures and extracts. Just like vanilla extract. Essential oils are made from distilling plants to get the concentrated aromatic oils from them. They are not like the person above says. They are pure oils from plants with nothing else in them. No alcohol. No grape seed oil.

    1. I was mislead & incorrect. I apologize, all has been changed. Really though, is calling me an idiot necessary? Everyone makes mistakes! Happy Holidays.

      1. I apologize for the idiot comment. As someone who’s livelihood is herbalism I spend so much time correcting misinformation with my clients. Pinterest and the Internet in general if filled with really bad DIY misubformation. I took my frustration out on you and I apologize. As you can see on this comment roll my herbal peeps can be a bit firey. We mean well. The problem we particularly had with your post title is that it creates confusion between herbal tinctures which are for consumption where true essential oils can be very very dangerous to ingest without proper guidance. Happy holidays.

        1. Thank you for your apology- I am sorry for unintentionally spreading misinformation & love being corrected (if done nicely). I understand that as bloggers it is our responsibility to be correct in the information we share, so again- my apologies!

  4. I appreciate your enthusiasm, yet am concerned because what you describe are not essential oils.
What you have described are tinctures not essential oils. Essential oils require a still and are more complicated to make. Tinctures are made as you have described with alcohol. Please correct the information as this could be quite confusing.

Also infused oils are made by placing plant material directly in oil. Essential oil extracts, as I said above are typically steam distilled.

    1. Thank you for clarifying! I appreciate that your approach, opposed to some of the other rude comments I received.

  5. Are you a fucking moron? You don’t know the difference between an essential oil and a tincture? WTF are you posting this idiocy for? Please tell me you don’t actually teach or write anything about this subject. Scary. Go get educated before you make a further ass of yourself.

    1. Typically I wouldn’t publish this HORRIBLE comment, but I’d like to just put this on display so the rest of my readers can see what nasty people are out there.

I made a mistake, I am not an expert in tinctures or essential oils… this was a post from a VERY long time ago & was told to me by a friend that’s what we were making. I do agree, I should have looked into it more before posting.

I apologize if for some odd reason my mistake has offended you, but all has been corrected & I will further research the subject if I plan to teach a course in it (which I won’t- so don’t you worry!).

Happy Holidays, now go some spread some cheer.

  6. Thanks for being responsible and making this correction. Truly honorable on your part!

  7. Can i use vodka for cinnamon if I don’t have brandy on hand or is it just a waste of time
